I followed a tutorial that requires gift cards to start with GC20. I ordered some gift cards and tried swiping the one for GC20100 and it shows %GC20100? but nothing happens. It works if I type in GC20100, so I’m guessing the % and ? are the problem. The ones I got work fine for logging in work fine. I’m not sure what I can do.

If you are in the USA we have a stored value gift card program that works with our credit card integration. You would not need to use any automation.
We do not have a tutorial for stored value gift cards on the forum.

The % and ? Are from the reader, if it has a utility you can enable/disable start and end chars.
If not you could adapt to use a script to select entity etc that strips the extra chars.
