SQL Server 2016 Enterprice developer edition is now free to use from microsoft. Was wondering if anyone here has installed it and if so are there any limitations and will it work with samba?
SQL is far more powerful than Samba will likely every utilize and will unlikely ever be a limitation to Samba.
@Jesse I believe has been using 2016 beta/dev without issue.
Only thing I was wondering about is the ability to use more cores and ram for a server that has multiple clients so that the database can handle all the devices… like for a business that has tablets for all the waitresses just went to the beach and there was a 300 seat restaurant with at least 20 waitresses with tablets… its mostly curiosity of wondering how samba would run with 15+ clients reading a writing to the database. They weren’t using samba but it sparked my imagination…
I am running SQL Express 2016 (released, not beta, free) on my Laptop for testing, and there are no issues. I am even already using some of the new JSON features in 2016.
This is not the same as the Enterprise Developer Edition, but I see no reason why that would make any difference to SambaPOS whatsoever, at least not in terms of “limitations” or “incompatibility”.
Think the PC spec like RAM and SSD will be more of a factor.
Believe express version spec limits are still pretty vast with if I remember right 4 cores and 32GB RAM
If your looking for performance;
Gigabit LAN
Good spec machine, good fast SSD - maybe even raid SSD with good amount of RAM.
If worries strip down windows to basics and run as SQL only machine.
A chunk will depend on your setup, basic samba is minimal. more automation etc the more intensive, I have dozens of rules on same events with some complex constrains and my server is just a SFF Optiplex - think its an i3 with 2x 120GB SSD and 8-12GB RAM, 3 terminals and office PC, hotel seats about 50 in rest, 30 in conserve, another 30-40 in the bars/lounges and a busy bar. High turnover with good mix of simple bar tickets and table bills, no sweat.
I have a client with 6 terminal setup of which one is the SQL server and thats only on a Core2Duo 3Ghz, normal HDD 4GB RAM and thats a nightclub/events hall with capacity for 1000 seated or almost 2000 standing. Not had any reports of lagging but there setup is basic bar with minimal automation.
I never ran the beta. I have been running the released version.
That is microscopic impact difference on SQL server. Enterprise version meant for VERY large corporations running millions of transactions a second. I highly doubt a restaurant will ever require that. Free version of SQL Express is way more than we will ever need for it.
I think the bigger deciding factor in how well it performs is a few things not really what version of SQL Server your running.
- Server edition of windows vs Consumer versions.
- Decent hardware including SSD drives.
- Configured as dedicated server.

that is why its free, they encourage developers to use it… great marketing
