Hardware for POS

Hi,

Just wondered fi anyone has any up-to-date recommendations for hardware to host SambaPos cost effectively?

Do we really need a 10th gen i5 with 8GB ram or are people able to run it on less than that?

I was ideally looking at an epos terminal rather than a separate PC and touch monitor.

Thanks.

CPU Intel i5 10th Gen or higher Avoid Atom or low-end Celeron CPUs for better performance
RAM Minimum 8 GB Ensures smooth multitasking and SQL operations
Storage 100 GB SSD or more SSDs offer faster boot and data access times
OS Windows 10 or 11 Required for compatibility with SambaPOS V5
Display Touchscreen, 1024×768 resolution or higher Full HD screens are supported and resize well
Printer ESC/POS-compatible thermal printer Works seamlessly with SambaPOS ticket templates
Cash Drawer RJ11 interface (triggered via printer) Most standard drawers are compatible
Barcode Reader USB or keyboard-emulated device Supports both barcode and QR code scanning
Network Wired Ethernet preferred for server; Wi-Fi for tablets Stable connection is key for multi-terminal setups3

Thanks I guess the 10th Gen i5 is considered a baseline. It just pushes up the cost. I wonder if you need this for the client tills or is it only recommended for the server? Be interesting to hear from anyone running on below the 10th gen i5 to see if it’s causing any issues.

As long as you’re not doing anything complex, Intel Celeron J1900 with 4Gb RAM and 128Gb SSD on Win10 IoT works just fine. I have done 100s of setups with this exact spec over the years.

More recently, we are using Intel Celeron J6412 with 8Gb RAM and 128Gb M.2 SSD with Full HD resolution, definitely see a speed increase overall in Windows and SambaPOS. Also have used this configuration with multiple MC3 without any issues.

Depending on what hardware you’re using, you can also go for Intel N97 or N100 which will perform even better and still good value for money compared to i5 processors. I’ve installed on a few Windows 11 tablets recently that had N100 processors and 6-8Gb RAM and also been fine, albeit the tablets do tend to run a bit more sluggish in Windows compared to a purpose built POS terminal.

I can vouch for J6412, 8GB RAM and 128GB M2 SSD, we use identical specs for our terminals and we got only good feedback from it

J64 is probably best bank for buck in performance, in todays space. N100 is pretty strong too slightly more expensive.

If doing more than 4 or 5 terminals i recommend putting 16gig ram in the server but it will operate ok on 8. Definitely reocmmend 16g if your going to use KDS, metrik, mc3 etc.
