Best practice for this is to follow as many tutorials as you can do not modify them, just follow them exact and get them working. Do as many as you can even ones you wont use in your own system. This gets you familiar with functions and once you feel confident then start modifying for your needs.
I know its tempting and many people feel they need to jump right in but I cant stress how beneficial the time spent on just following tutorials can be.
I understand. After my frustration with the close button I followed a close till drawer tutorial and it worked first time.
