The Default Cost parameter is not going to change your Purchase Cost. It is there for convenience only when making an Inventory Purchase.

The Cost of your Purchases is based on making purchases. The reported Cost, which is an average, could change over time if the Purchase Cost for the item fluctuates. But again, this has nothing to do with Default Cost. It is calculated via Purchase Transactions only.

That is simply a matter of Preference. Personally, I never use the Transaction Unit; I use Additional Unit(s).
