Its built in by default. If you run windows update often you will notice it downloads definition files for windows defender daily.
@Jesse I just recently purchased this ( https://shop.minix.us/z64w )and it works amazingly as a terminal for samba!.. Just setup a group policy to run samba as a shell and have it auto login and launch samba on boot. Best part they have a store here in the us so RMA and warranties are handled locally and not over seas!.. And its got a built in Ethernet port or wireless… Good stuff!
Wow that’s impressive little pc. Does it keep up well? No slowdown?
Yea it works great and since sambas is running as a shell none of the windows explorer DLLs or processes are running in the background so its running nice and lean… CPU never spikes and ram ideals at about 700megs out of the 2gigs it has avalible. Best part is it comes with windows 8.1 so no need to buy a license and it should be able to upgrade to windows 10 when its released for free!
That is so awesome! Quick question, you caught my attention when you said samba is running as shell. How can I do that and does samba run as smooth as a modern full pc? @antasp3136
Thanks!
@Hasa there are a few different ways to accomplish this… one is to setup a Group Policy setting… If you have a server with active directory setup you can create the GPO and link the users to it so that only those users launch samba as a shell. The nice thing about setting it up as a GPO is all you have to do is set the GPO and add the users and nomore work needs to be done on the workstation. The other way to do it is to setup a Local Group Policy setting on the workstation but this would apply for all users on the workstation so even the administrator would have samba launch as the only shell, this means no start menu or any other programs running in the background… Here is a screen shot of the the GPO:
To get around this you would just need to press Ctrl+Alt+Del and start the explorer.exe process which would then give you the normal windows interface. The other way to do this is to go through the registry for the user that you want to only have samba as the shell. Fot that method you would need to create a new string value called shell located here: HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\ then add the path to samba.presentation.exe to have it launch when the user logs in. View screen shot below:
@Jesse Here is a view of my task manager with samba running as a shell… very small footprint!..
So is there absolutely no lag as you use samba? @Jesse
Nope, No lag at all. Its the only program running on the system. Everything else that is running is running as a service.
Project Spartan was released for testing with latest build 10049. I gotta say I am impressed. I can use my pen from my surface and actually write and circle stuff on the browser and it interacts with it… very cool.
Its very fast so far.
Spartan is buggy still however so don’t expect a hyper smooth experience yet. But I am enjoying testing it.
I thought I would mention that Windows 10 is nearing the final official release in July. The next Insiders build will be dropping codenames for several things and for all intensive purposes it is VERY similar to the final build. Microsoft just announced as well that if you are on the insider preview you will be able to download and install the final copy free when it is released this will allow you to download the final ISO or media disks and install clean with the final version for free as well.
Now might be a good time to grab the preview and get a head start exploring windows 10.
I have been using windows 10 since the preview first released and it had its share of bugs as any preview software would, but the latest version is VERY stable and is so much fun to use. The next release which will probably be the last release before the final version is released i am sure will be even better.
Just signed up looks good.
Have avoided updating as didnt want to mess up my main PC which I use for printing business but will update my laptop over the weekend.
