Windows CE Samba

I bought 4 x Micros 4 Point of Sale units with Windows CE

I have tried to run the installer but cant run. So i looked at making a file using MAKECAB that wont run or recognised by Windows CE, I then installed on a PC and tried to create a cab of the running pos only no database installed.

That cant be made in to makecab due to error on MAKECAB

Can any one advise?

Im open to using older versions if need be or if anyone knows how to update my current CE to a version that will work with Samba

What base does CE work with? Samba v4 upwards require Windows 7 or equivilent or newer in order to allow install of up to date .net framework.

I have no idea i hoped for windows embeded like XP or 7 for the date. i can try and update but it uses boot loader from compact flash so i may only be able to go to CE 6

Pretty sure it’s not going to work on CE.

Thats my fear but is there a way of updating these units to Windows pos ready or 7 etc? i cant see how to do it as there is no bios at startup etc.

Firstly… it depends on the specifications of the machines. What motherboard does it use? How much ram is currently installed?

Bare in mind those micros systems that ran CE believe could only ever support up to 1gb ram with a standard spindle hard drive.

You could possibly install POS ready 7 but if the specifications are quite low, you will encounter a very alow terminal.

That is also on a 1gb ram system.

You could possibly try sambapos v3 but i would recommend if using v3, you may want to at least upgrade to windows xp sp2…

In saying those recommendations though, please bare in mind there is currently very little support for samba v3 as support is mainly given for v4 and v5 here. Microsoft has also stopped support for windows xp which means there will be no more security or compatibilty updates for that version of windows. So it probably isnt even recommended to use the internrt on it as you will be left quite vulnerable.

But you could always upgrade some of its components and go from there. Just my two cents

What model micros system do you have?

It has MODEL: Workstation 4 System Unit

However product code : 500614-001

Hope that hels

Ok those systems are diskless systems which means they dont have a hard drive. The application is loaded from a flash card into the RAM for it to run windows CE. Its possible to remove the flash and install windows xp on it then have it boot into the usb but its a bit tricky. Ive never used those systems but i have had a few been given to me to experiment with and their OS is usually built into and loaded onto the RAM after boot up.

I also just checked their user manual to check for possibilities, and it does have a bootloader but ive never really experimented.

Your best bet is to check out a few forums searches on google to see who has actually successfully installed windows xp or 7 on those machines… but looking at those specifications, even if you did manage to install windows xp or windows 7, you may find you need for win xp download and install all the drivers manually including sp2 with .net framework 4 too. In saying you can use a USB. Im not 100% sure at the supported amount of memory those machines take however you may need at least a 32gb usb.

Hope it helps.
